Astronomical Instruments Research Centre
( NAIRC )
Nanjing
Astronomical Intruments Research Centre (NAIRC), China, was founded by Chinese
Academy of Sciences in 1958 for developing mainly the large and medium
astronomical instruments and also other instruments by integrated optical,
mechanical, electronical and computer techniques. There are about 520 staff
members working in NAIRC, including one China Academician, 17 senior researchers
and professors, 60 senior engineers and 150 technicians. They compose a
technical team to study and design the overall astronomical instruments
including optical system, precise mechanics, automatic and computer controls.
NAIRC is equipped with precise mechanical machines, electronic testing
instruments, large and medium optical fabricating machines, of which some are
very rare in China. NAIRC is specialized in optical process technology for
aspheric surface, birefringent crystal, etc. Its off axis aspheric technique is
in the domestic lead position. The technology of antenna panel for millimetre
wavelength radio telescope is also being advanced in China. NAIRC adopts
astronomical technique and methods research as its subject direction. Its main
developing areas are the instruments for stellar, solar and satellite
observations, astrometric and radio astronomical instruments and other
instruments by comprehensive techniques. The great achievements have been
obtained in basic research field such as the active optics and astronomical
optical interferometry, which have been placed as the major research projects of
Chinese Academy of Sciences. Especially, after finishing the pre-research in
NAIRC, the Large Sky Area Multi-objects Fibre Spectroscopy Telescope (LAMOST)
has been rated as one of the major national scientific projects.
NAIRC is an authorized unit for training M.Sc and Ph.D students with the subject
of "Astronomical Instruments and Methods". NAIRC is having wide
international contacts with more than 20 countries. The multilevel academic
exchange and technical-trade collaboration have been set up with overseas
scientists, institutes and specialized corporations.

Reviews reviews research in all wavelength bands, ranging from radio to
gamma-ray, as well as computational and laboratory astrophysics.
New Astronomy is
fully electronic, available on the World Wide Web. A traditional paper edition
is also published. The electronic version is linked to major scientific data
centers, such as CDS, ADS, and NED.
New Astronomy aims to publish only the best articles in this field,
without page charges, and with a very short publication time. Each field is
represented by a specialist Editor who is directly responsible for the review
process.

to 30 - 60 deg.K, permitting extremely deep exposures at near infrared
wavelengths with a 10 year life. A key requirement is to break the HST cost
paradigm through the use of new technology and management methods. This site is
designed to serve as the starting point for finding online NGST Study

professional and amateur, such that the identity of each of the NGC and IC
objects is known with as much certainty as we can reasonably bring to it from
the existing historical record. Contains a lot of historical NGC/IC data,

VLA Sky Survey
( NVSS )
The
NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) is mapping the sky north of -40 deg declination at
1.4 GHz. The principal data products are (1) 4 deg X 4 deg continuum maps "
cubes" with three planes containing Stokes I, Q, and U images, (2) source
lists, and (3) processed (u,v) data sets. The maps have 45 arcsec FWHM
resolution and nearly uniform rms noise, about 0.45 mJy/beam = 0.14 K (Stokes I)
and 0.29 mJy/beam (Stokes Q and U). The rms uncertainties in right ascension and
declination vary from 0.3 arcsec for strong (S > 30 mJy) point sources to 5
arcsec for the faintest (S ~ 2.5 mJy) detectable sources.

aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a joint ESA/NASA mission,
which was launched on December 2, 1995. LASCO is now producing coronal images
from all three of its coronagraphs. The Solar Ultraviolet Spectral Irradiance
Monitor (SUSIM) experiment begun on October 11, 1991 aboard the Upper Atmosphere
Research Satellite (UARS) continues to measure the solar UV spectral irradiance.
The High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) experiment has collected
