Laboratory
for Computational Astrophysics
The LCA is a joint venture between the NSF, the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications, and the Department of Astronomy at the University
of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Its purpose is to develop and disseminate
numerical algorithms and community codes for CFD, primarily for astrophysics.
The LCA provides software packages for 3-D MHD, 2-D radiation MHD, 1-D adaptive
mesh radiation hydrodynamics, and 3-D visualization and animation. These codes
are available free of charge to academic researchers.
Laboratory
for High Energy Astrophysics
( LHEA )
The
Laboratory was reorganized in October 1995 into two science and two technical
support branches. The science branches are the "X-ray Astrophysics
Branch" and the "Gamma Ray and Cosmic Ray Astrophysics Branch".
The latter contains several subgroups including low and high energy cosmic rays,
low and high energy gamma-rays, and a theoretical group. In addition to the four
branches there is an "Office for Guest Investigator Programs" with
overall responsibility for the utilization by the astrophysics community of
several high energy astrophysics observatories that the laboratory administers (
ROSAT, ASCA, CGRO and XTE).

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is a collaboration between the University of
Arizona, the Italian astronomical community, which is represented by the Arcetri
Astrophysical Observatory in Florence, and the Research Corporation in Tucson.
The goal of the LBT project is to construct a binocular telescope consisting of
two 8.4-meter mirrors on a common mount. This telescope will be equivalent in
light-gathering power to a single 11.8-meter instrument. Because of its
binocular arrangement, the telescope will have a resolving power (ultimate image
sharpness) corresponding to a 23-meter telescope.

The aims of LISA-II, a proposed IAU Colloquium, are twofold: (1) to provide the
opportunity for librarians of astronomical observatories and institutes to meet
to discuss common problems, and ways of stimulating greater cooperation between
libraries and their services; and (2) to raise discussion about, and to throw
light on, the interface areas between astronomical libraries and the wide range
of online and other astronomical computer-based services which are becoming ever
more widespread.
