JEFFERY,
Simon
( Armagh Observatory )
Simon
Jeffery's web pages include descriptions of the properties of hydrogen-deficient
stars, including an on-line catalogue and descriptions of the techniques
(atmosphere codes and atomic data) used in their analysis. The discussion is
placed in the general context of the late stages of stellar evolution.

This
is a public access computer site containing information on and images from
missions conducted by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; it is operated by the
JPL Public Information Office. Contents of the site include:
-- JPL news releases, status reports, fact sheets and other data on JPL
missions.
-- Images from JPL missions as GIF computer files. These may be displayed on
various makes of computers; viewing software may also be downloaded.
-- Back issues of JPL's in-house newspaper, Universe.
In addition, teacher materials provided by the JPL Public Education Office are
planned to be added shortly.
Subdirectories are named archive, educator, images, missions, news, sircxsar,

( JHU )
About
the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy: Current research
activities can be divided roughly into five areas: solid-state physics,
high-energy physics, astrophysics, plasma spectroscopy, and theoretical physics.
Work in the Center for Astrophysical Sciences (CAS) at JHU is now centered in
three areas: developing instrumentation for astronomical observations,
particularly from space; optical observational astronomy from the ground and
space; and theory. Two large space astronomy projects are currently active in
CAS: the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, a far-UV spectrophotometer which made
its first flight aboard the space shuttle in December, 1990, and its second
flight on March 2, 1995; and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, a
free-flying satellite whose launch is expected in 2000.

Joint
Astronomy Centre
( Hilo, Hawaii )
The
Joint Astronomy Centre incorporates the 15m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)
and the 3.8m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) on the 4200m summit of
Mauna Kea along with the Centre's Hawaii headquarters in Hilo. The facility is
operated by the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh on behalf of the Science and
Engineering Research Council of the United Kingdom, the Nederlandse Organisatie
Voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek and the National Research Council of Canada.
Joint
Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica
( JACARA )
This page is a resource for Antarctic astronomy, providing information of
interest to anyone considering the Antarctic plateau as the site for a future
major international observatory. It contains papers, images, details of meetings
and lists of people involved with Antarctic astrononomy.
Joint
Institute for VLBI in Europe / European VLBI Network
( JIVE / EVN )
The
European VLBI Network (EVN) was formed in 1980 by a consortium of five of the
major radio astronomy institutes in Europe (the European Consortium for VLBI).
Since 1980, the EVN and the Consortium has grown to include 9 institutes with 12
telescopes in 8 western European countries as well as associated institutes with
telescopes in Poland, Russia, Ukraine and China. Proposals for additional
telescopes in Spain and Italy are under consideration, and furthermore, the EVN
can be linked to the 7-element Jodrell Bank MERLIN interferometer in the UK and
to the US Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to create a " global
network" . In 1993 the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE) was
created, with the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (Dwingeloo)
acting as the host institute. It will provide both scientific user support and a
correlator facility. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) achieves
ultra-high angular resolution and is a multi-disciplinary technique e.g. imaging
of extragalactic radio sources, geodesy and astrometry. See EVN-TWG
Meeting . There is
also an EVN anonFTP directory at JB .

Jordanian
Astronomical Society
( JAS )
The
Jordanian Astronomical Society (JAS) - previously known as the Jordanian Amateur
Astronomers Society - was founded in Amman in September 1987. It is temporarily
located in Haya Cultural Center.
The Journal of Astronomical Data accepts raw and reduced data from observations
as well as from theoretical research, reduction software, complete descriptions
of new instruments, PhD theses with extensive data tables, catalogues, graphs,
computer code, and also lengthy articles, or regular articles accompanied by the
data on which it is based.
Contributions describe in short the astrophysical background and motive for the
scientific work done, a complete description of the data-collecting process, an
assessment of the accuracy of the data, next to the data themselves.
All data are published on CD-ROM.
