Hallo northern sky ( planetarium software program )

The program Hallo northern sky is a simple windows application which plots an electronic version of the night sky. It displays all stars to magnitude 8.0 (or 9.5) and 8415 deep sky objects. It also shows the planets, Moon, Sun, the Jovian moons, phases of the Moon and inner planets, solar and lunar eclipses, rings and moons of Saturn and some minor planets and comets. The intention of the program is to familiarise you with the night sky and prepare yourself with a map for a night with your telescope. To help you with this, all deepsky objects are displayed in the correct size and orientation if available.

Hands On Universe ( HOU )

Hands-On Universe is an educational program that enables students to investigate the Universe while applying tools and concepts from science, math, and technology. Hands-On Universe (HOU) has developed and piloted an educational program that enables high school students to request their own observations from professional observatories. HOU students download CCD images to their classroom computers and use HOU's powerful image processing software to visualize and analyze their data. HOU also provides comprehensive curriculum that integrates many of the topics and skills outlined in the national goals for science and math education into open- ended astronomical investigations. Over the next several years HOU will develop activities and tools for middle school students and informal education centers as well as implementing HOU in regional high school networks across the world, including Department of Defense Dependent Schools.

Hierarchical Equal Area isoLatitude Pixelisation of the sphere ( HEALPix )

Future satellite missions to measure the CMB anisotropy - NASA's Microwave Anisotropy Probe, MAP, and ESA's Planck - will produce multifrequency data sets sufficient for the construction of full-sky maps of the microwave sky at an angular resolution of a few arcminutes. The principal concern in construction of HEALPix was to create a mathematical structure which supports the discretisation of functions on a sphere at sufficiently high resolution to facilitate fast and accurate statistical and astrophysical analysis of such massive full-sky data sets.
The HEALPix package is available for distribution.

Hierarchical Triangular Mesh ( HTM )

The Hierarchical Triangular Mesh (HTM) is the indexing concept used in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Science Archive to partition the data by location on the celestial sphere. The HTM is a partitioning scheme to divide the surface of the unit sphere into spherical triangles. It is a hierarchical scheme and the subdivisions have not exactly, but roughly equal areas.

I am an observational astronomer interested in stellar populations in the Galactic halo and external galaxies.
The questions that I would like to be involved in answering are: (1) how old are galactic halos and how did galaxies formation? (2) why is the metallicity distribution in the M31 halo so radically different from that in the Galactic halo? (3) how did globular clusters form and how are they related to the galactic halos that they sit in?

Hubble Deep Field ( HDF )

The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is a Director's Discretionary program on HST in Cycle 5 to image a typical field at high galactic latitude in four wavelength passbands as deeply as reasonably possible. In order to optimize observing in the time available, a field in the northern continuous viewing zone (CVZ) was selected and images were taken for 10 consecutive days, or approximately 150 orbits. Shorter 1-orbit images were also obtained of the fields immediately adjacent to the primary HDF in order to facilitate spectroscopic follow-up by ground-based telescopes. The observations were carried out from 18-30 December 1995, and the data are available to the community for study.

Hubble Space Telescope Astrometry Science Team

See how astrometry, one of the oldest branches of astronomy, uses the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the newest tools of astronomy. Interrogate our home page to find out what we do, who we are, and what we've done. Look over our shoulder as we search for planets around a nearby star. We use the Fine Guidance Sensors aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure star positions, study binary stars and study stellar motions. Primarily, stellar positions yield parallaxes which provide information on distance. The distances to nearby stars calibrate the entire astronomical distance scale. Monitoring star position may reveal previously unseen companions. We search for planets near Proxima Centauri and Barnard's Star. We also work to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to an extragalactic (non-rotating) reference frame. We study binary stars unresolvable using ground-based techniques. We inspect stars to determine whether or not they are binary. We use the Planetary Camera to obtain images of stars in globular clusters. The precision with which we can measure positions is so high, that after 3-5 years a second image will show motions of stars in clusters 6 kpc distant.
